On my lunch break I decided to go for a walk
around town. I figure, walking aimlessly around the city during break beats sitting
in an office chair any day. Well..... that was until I stepped outside and
realized The Arctic has made it's way to NYC.....It’s F.r.E.e.Z.i.N.g out there! However,
I decided I needed the exercise, and faced the brutal rain/snow/wind of today’s
Nor’easter.
After about ....oh 5 minutes—I realized I couldn't take it anymore,
and sought refuge inside a Starbucks near Times Square. “Caramel Apple Cider
please”...The perfect beverage for a stormy day in the city.
As I sat in the corner of the Starbucks enjoying
my Cider, I found myself looking out the window at all
the people anxiously rushing by in their winter coats, umbrellas, hats and
scarves. People watching has always been a guilty pleasure. In fact, friends
have even commented how easily my attention is lost in places like malls, airports, cities,
gyms..... basically anywhere with crowds. I can’t help it, I just love people! I blame my Mom. She has the same problem. : )
With everyone
rushing by, my eyes caught hold of the sweetest elderly couple across the
street. What a sight they were; him ever-smiling, with a bit of pride as he
held his jacket over her head to keep her dry from the rain. A sense of satisfaction and contentment emanated from them. She was probably around ....oh, 78. Fair skinned, tall, graceful and elegant. He
was a bit shorter and older I think too. I imagined they had been married for
years, yet their love seemed fresh – an awe-inspiring bond that spoke of young
love.
For a very long time, people have
searched for the meaning of Love. But even the great philosophers, with their
profound definitions, could not fully touch its true essence. Songs played, books written, movies made—all with
the intent to capture love at it's finest. Yet, it was this sweet couple that emulated
the pure essence of Love more than any movie ever could. Why? ... Because they were real.
In a world full of trying times, divorce, and hate....this couple had found it. They held onto it. They cherished it.
And you wanna know what else?
I have found it too.
To me, Love is the only word in human existence that is literally undefinable. You only know it when you feel
it and it’s a feeling that is impossible to incorporate into just one word....yet
we somehow have no choice. I Love You—the three most powerful words in the English language. Yet, not powerful enough...
After watching that old couple for a long while, I realized that above all else, when all is said and done and I have reached the end of the road here on Earth and am at a point where
I can look back at all the things I accomplished and did in my life—I
want to know that that I did one thing well...
Love Somebody.
I am so happy and truly blessed to have found that Somebody. :)
